You can't always get rid of the negative.

September 01, 2013

This is a complicated issue (to say the least!). I have some people in my life that currently have to be here. I have some that are negative and cranky, rude and disrespectful. I have some that are awesome and happy, helpful and trustworthy. It is difficult to deal with the negative ones. It gets overwhelming and trying. There have been times when I have tried with people, tried so hard in so many ways, but I have felt defeated or out of control. Some days I would try to just be myself but they come in and act the way they do and I would let it take over my thoughts and emotions for the day. Some days I would try to just ignore them but that just took over my whole day with a wall of negativity. That't not who I am. More so it definitely is not who I want to be. And it's not just me who sees me acting like this, I have kids that see how I act and react to things.
I have had friends and family tell me over and over to just get rid of the negative people. Its all over the internet....remove those that are negative, get rid of people that are nasty, etc.

But the reality sometimes is that you can't always do that in the present. There are times when you have people in your life that you just can not get rid of so you need to learn to deal with them.

Today I woke up with the realization that it is not my place anymore. It is not in me to try to change these people anymore...not emotionally, physically, mentally, anything. Not because I am defeated but because they wont, cant, don't allow it. I can either continue to keep trying and have them take it for granted, ignore them and keep this wall up, or realize I can not do anything to change this situation as it is right now but know I can in the future. I know there is a saying about making the most of what you have now, as you have it. That quote always made sense but it was never terribly clear to me till now.
I have always tried to make the best of it, everyday. I have always tried to keep negative thoughts out and negative people at a distance  but it wasn't always that easy. It is hard to be around someone and not be affected by their attitudes. It is hard to wake up where you don't think you should be a 'just deal with it'. But today my mind seems to be working on a different level. I went to sleep last night feeling so off and blah about everything. I woke up today feeling totally in control. Life is going to give me things, situations, people to deal with...good and bad and I have to only learn from all of it.

  1. If you can't kick the negative people to the curb, you can only control how you react/interact with them. Good luck!

  6. This post serves as a reminder to me to be more positive. I tried a couple of years ago to be more positive and was glad to do so. However, lately I've felt more negative and realize that it's not helping at all. Also, thanks for the reminder that when we're negative, we bring others down. I hope you can stay positive around those negative people.

  7. Sounds like a complicated situation. If you are unable to remove these negative people from your life then you will have to change your reaction to them. Best of luck to you. Not easy for sure.

  8. So very true. It is so easy to get dragged down into someone else's pit of negativity. Something that might help is to have a "talk" with yourself before you even get out of bed. Tell yourself that when those negative words start, you will be able to be calm, collected and sure of yourself. Then when they DO start, you will be able to easier remember your self-talk and stay on an even keel. I wish you the best!
