Schools Out For Summer

We made it...well almost. The older 2 boys (in public school) are done for this school year. They finished out 8th and 9th earlier today. The younger 3 (in homeschool) still have a few more days and then we can cross of Kindergarten, 2nd, and 6th.

It has been a good year overall. There were a few days, for each of the kids, that were a little slower than others but overall and collectively they made it.

Glenn made it through his first year back in public school after being in homeschool from 5th grade on. Alot of people thought it was a bad idea when we started talking about school options, he wouldn't want to go back to school and he wouldn't have the motivation to make it but he did. I was a little stressed about it when it came closer to the school year starting this past fall, only because the reason he was in homeschool was because he was bored at school and had attendance issues. He has also changed his career interests from Engineering to Biology. Not sure which way he is going to go in the Bio field but we are looking at all of his options.
It was a little up and down for Ben with getting into fights and not putting to much effort into his time management. He has so much potential but he disregards it. It has been a struggle, not just this year but for years now. I told him he better get all the nonsense out of him by the end of this school year because if he starts high school in the fall and gets into trouble he will be pulled out. He is signed up for cross country so he will start running a little more over the summer weeks to get ready.
Both the older boys have volunteering they are doing over the summer. As of now they have are volunteering at The Great BrainWash in August and have orientation at Habitat for Humanity next week.

As for the younger 3....Tierney wants to go back to public school in the fall but the middle schools around here are just yuck. She loves the social aspect of school, always has. I have talked to her about possibly doing her 7th year over the summer via homeschool and in the fall staying in homeschool, completing 8th and being able to start high school with her brothers the following year but no decisions made yet. I will leave it mostly up to her. If she goes into public and its too much trouble then she can always come back to homeschool. Garrett and Emmaleigh will continue with homeschool till, as of now, they start high school. I hate that the middle schools in Florida seem to be so neglected. It's like they teach all the basics in elementary and get you liking school and then you are sent to middle schools, which are oversized daycares in my opinion. I just think that the middle school years are where alot of molding takes place, alot of kids trying to be their own, and there is no support for that. This is a story for another post, not an update though.

I am proud of all the kids. They all did great, and the years seem to be flying by quicker and quicker. The summer just started and it already feels like it is going to be over in a blink!

Are your kids out for the summer?

  1. Ah I miss those days when I actually had holidays with nothing but hanging out with friends. Adult life sucks in comparison.

  3. Ah summer break. The long lost love of adults. I remember days and days spent at the beach or at home just doing nothing. In short - the good old days.

  6. I cannot believe that Summer is already here but I am so excited. The kids still have a few more weeks of school before the fun begins.

  7. I fear this summer may be over-booked! Trying to keep the kids having some fun, but not running all of us ragged! Hopefully we can fit in some relaxation in with all of the fun and learning activities!

  8. The kids here have another week of school. I think their last day is the 17th of June but we get lots of holidays.

  9. We in india dont really have summer times. We are so burdened with exams and internships we dont really get the chance to enjoy summer holidays.

  10. In Finland schools are out in the end of May/ beginning of June and the holiday takes about 2,5 months. It's always a relief when the final exams are over and one can just enjoy free days. Well, actually everyone wants to get some extra money and do something productive at least a part of the summer time.

  12. That is great that you home-schooled for awhile before entering into public school. I actually did the opposite and pulled my oldest daughter out of school in order to home school her to catch up and focus. Then when she returned to school, she returned with a different out look than before and now she is a college graduate. It is a good thing, no matter what the naysayers may say. Kudos to you and yours.

  15. Wow. It must be quite chaotic having children studying in different grades and schools. It was fortunate that you seem to manage quite well. I hope you`ll continue to be supportive of your children`s education.
